Former Roman All-Catholic Soccer Standout Added to Coaching Staff
PHILADELPHIA, PA – September 1, 2011: Acting to fill the coaching vacancy created by the departure of Freshmen Head Coach Alex Kulp for Chestnut Hill College, the Roman Catholic High School Soccer program officially announced today that former two-time All Catholic, Matt Meier (RCHS ’07) has been added to the coaching staff for the 2011 season. In addition to being a two-time All Catholic selection, Meier led the Cahillites in goals as a junior and was named the team’s best soccer player as a senior in 2007. According to Head Varsity Coach, Ray DeStephanis, “Matt had some great years here at Roman playing under Pat Cain and has enjoyed both individual and team successes in his career. His youthful energy makes him the perfect choice to lead our freshmen team as their head coach.”
In Meier’s eyes, upholding the past traditions of Roman Soccer is a big responsibility. “I want to inspire young people to work hard so that their efforts can pay off in the future. I see what the proper guidance and hard work did for me coming out of Roman, now it’s my turn to give back”, Meier confidently proclaimed. The Fishtown native continued, “I’m going to create and run interesting practices and along the way, identify and record team and personal goals with an outline for reaching the agreed upon set of goals.” And according to DeStephanis, “the fact that Matt still plays the game at a high level and is a younger coach who will be on the pitch playing and training with the freshmen will pay big dividends for the programs newest players.”
Under DeStephanis, Meier will join the coaching ranks along side: Glenn Steiner, Head Coach, Junior Varsity; Jerry Brindisi, Assistant Head Varsity Coach; Mark Casasanto, Assistant Varsity Coach and John Henriques, Goalkeeping Coach.
Some of Matt Meier’s career highlights:
Roman Catholic High School, Class of 2007:
Three Year Varsity Soccer Player;
Two-time All Catholic selection;
Senior Choice Award (2007);
Coaches Award (2007).
Gwynedd Mercy and Club Soccer:
Two-time All Conference Selection (GMC);
Golden Boot Award (CASA League Soccer).
Matt Meier’s Goals for the 2011 Season:
I want to lead my players in the right direction, on and off the field. I believe in instilling values as a coach that can be exhibited and utilized throughout their lives. I want to create a passion for the sport for my players and for me personally, I want to enhance my ability as a coach by embracing this wonderful opportunity to return to lead the freshmen squad at my alma mater.
