Roman Soccer on the Rise

The 2011 season for Roman soccer was an exciting, successful year with the Cahillites finishing the regular season in fourth place. This fourth place finish signifies the progression of the program over the past few years.
Only two years ago, Roman had to fight to secure the last playoff spot. But now, Roman is on the verge of being considered a soccer power in the Catholic league.
Roman finished the year with a respectable 9-6-3 record (6-3-3 in the Catholic league). A strong defense and excellent play between the pipes by its goaltenders led the way for the purple and gold as they recorded shutouts in 7 of the team’s 9 victories, while allowing only a little above 1 goal per game.
The success of this season was due to a complete team effort with tenacious work at both ends of the field. Timely goals and a “never say die” attitude allowed the team to comeback from deficits to earn ties in three high profile Catholic league games.
Most notable was the game versus long time school rival St Joe’s Prep, when Roman found an equalizer with just three minutes remaining in regulation. This year’s squad, led by its 10 seniors and 5 All-Catholic selections, battled its way to the semifinals, the first time the program has reached this point since 1997. This playoff run began with a victory over Conwell Egan in the quarter finals, and ended at the hands of Father Judge in a toughly fought semifinal match.
With several juniors and sophomores getting significant minutes this year, Roman looks poised to end its 14-year championship drought next November.
